Monday May 15th 2017
A wrong-way driver caused a serious crash in Monroe County early this morning. 82-year-old Sam Pontillo of Tobyhanna was traveling south in the northbound lanes of Interstate 380 in Coolbaugh Township just before one when he struck a vehicle head-on. Police say Pontillo was seriously injured and trapped inside the vehicle with apparent broken bones. He was flown to the hospital while the 18-year-old driver of Scranton he hit was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The teenager swerved into the right lane, escaping a head-on collision. At that time- that lane was occupied by a tractor trailer. Luckily only minor damage occurred to the truck. State police believe alcohol may have been behind the crash. State police are still investigating and are awaiting Pontillo's blood test results.
