All of the member wineries have won numerous awards at state, national and international levels.

9/7 "NEW ECONOMIC VISIONS" DISCUSSION AT WCPL

WAYNEPEACE SPONSORS "NEW ECONOMIC VISIONS" DISCUSSION AT WCPL, TUESDAY, SEPT. 7

(HONESDALE) Waynepeace will sponsor a discussion entitled "ENOUGH: New Economic Visions for a More Peaceful World" at the Wayne County Public Library at 5 PM on Tuesday, September 7, 2010. The session will be moderated by Waynepeace co-founder Skip Mendler, who recently attended a workshop on economics education sponsored by United for a Fair Economy at the Highlander Center in Tennessee.

"Existing economic models, systems, and theories, both on the left and the right, have proven insufficient to deal with the rapid changes in our world," says Mendler. "So to create a society that is just, sustainable, peaceful, and prosperous, we will need new ideas that both build on the progress we've made so far, and learn from the mistakes of the past."

The program is open to the public, and refreshments will be served. Use of Wayne County Public Library facilities by Waynepeace does not constitute an endorsement by WCPL of Waynepeace's policies or positions. For more information, visit Waynepeace's website at www.waynepeace.org, or call 570-251-3637.

9/5 LEHMAN TO HOLD COMMUNITY DAY – MAGIC IN THE VALLEY

Magic, Music and More at the former Magic Valley Fairgrounds
Bushkill, PA, August 23, 2010: The Supervisors of Lehman Township are proud to announce its First Annual Community Day – Magic in the Valley. This exciting event will take place Sunday, September 5th from 12 noon to 8 pm at the Lehman Township Community Park on Winona Falls Road in Bushkill. Parking and admission to the event are free.
There is a full day of exciting events planned including two live bands, magician, face painter, clown, large moon bounce, petting zoo, pony rides and much more. There will be an antique auction, craft vendors and area non-profit groups and county agencies providing information about the services they provide and how people can become involved. Food concessions will benefit the Bushkill Volunteer Fire Company, the Bushkill/Smithfields Lions Club and Boy Scout Troop 87. At the end of the evening, there will be a spectacular fireworks display!
“We decided to call the event ‘Magic in the Valley’ as a play on words as a tieback to when the property was called Magic Valley. As it turns out we are going to have one of the area’s premier magicians, Joe Raven performing at the event,” said Lehman Township Supervisor Dick Vollmer.
The park will open at 12 noon and the first band will be The Gerry Gessie Show at 1 pm. This dynamic duo features outstanding music with audience interaction and wholesome family comedy. “I’ve attended Gerry and Ronnie’s shows and they provide a great time for people of all ages,” claimed Paul Menditto, another Lehman Supervisor.
As a special treat at 4 pm, the McElligott School of Irish Dance will feature their very talented Irish Step Dancers. The McElligott School dancers have performed on television, for governmental dignitaries, both at home and abroad. They will truly inspire you to have a “Love of the Dance.”
Magician Joe Raven will then take the stage and present “Close-up magic” which is performed right under your nose where everyone becomes part of the show and will walk away asking “How did he do that?”
At 5 o’clock, the featured band Smokin’ will play their outstanding repertoire of rock music from a variety of artists that is sure to have the park rocking for hours.
Going on during the day will be from 2 to 5 pm a Face Painter from Raven Entertainment. Also from 2 to 5 pm, My 3 Gals Farm will have a petting zoo and pony rides for a small extra charge.
Zoe the Clown will be on hand from 3 to 6 pm entertaining children with zany antics and balloon art.
There will be a variety of Craft Vendors displaying their wares and even an Antique Auction with a professional auctioneer. Bushkill Outreach will have their famous Flea Market where you can pick up some tremendous bargains.
The Bushkill Historical Society has set up their new home at the park and it will be open to visitors during the event. Be sure to take some time to see interesting artifacts and newspaper articles regarding the history of Bushkill.
There will be an extra large Moon Bounce with a slide throughout the day and the Bushkill Volunteer Fire Company will provide free children’s games. Finally, the day will end with a spectacular Fireworks Display.
Magic in the Valley is one of many events going on this year at Lehman Park. There is the Free Summer Concert Series the fourth Sunday of each month from June through September, the Blues Festival, the Children’s Fishing Derby, Juneteenth and the Haunted Halloween Trail. “We constantly look for ways to bring free or low-cost events to the people,” said John Sivick, Chairman of the Lehman Supervisors. “We know that even if people don’t have a lot of money to spend, they still need something fun to do. We provide this to them right in their own backyard,” Sivick concluded.
Lehman Community Park has a rich history, starting as a park known as Winona Five Falls, then as Magic Valley Amusement Park, transforming into the Renaissance Faire, then the Pike County Agricultural Fare and finally back to a park. To get there, take Route 209 North from Marshalls Creek and turn left at Fernwood Hotel onto Winona Falls Road. The park is about two miles up on the right.
In the event of inclement weather, the rain date will be Monday, September 6th.
For more information or to become a vendor, call Lehman Township at 570-588-9365 Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.

“We also look forward to kicking off an exciting fall here at our four-season resort.”

9/11 THE AMERICAN RED CROSS AND POCONO RACEWAY CHALLENGE DONORS

Recruitment Challenge Offers Incredible Rewards

August 18, 2010 (Ashley, PA) – Pocono Raceway and the American Red Cross Northeastern Pennsylvania Region have partnered once again for their fifth annual September 11th memorial blood drives on September 9th and 10th. A main drive will be held at the Raceway in Long Pond, PA on the 9th, with satellite drives occurring on both the 9th and 10th for people who cannot be at the track location. As the second largest NASCAR themed blood drive in the United States, the series will help to ensure a sufficient blood supply for patients in need this fall.

New at this year’s blood drives, Pocono Raceway and the American Red Cross present the Recruitment Challenge. Everyone who donates is encouraged to recruit at least five of their friends, family, neighbors, or co-workers to donate at any one of the participating Pocono Raceway drives. The individual who recruits the most presenting donors will receive two Pacesetter Club seats to the 2011 Pocono 500, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event. Amenities include: pre-race pit/paddock passes, food, beverage, private restrooms, and much more. The runner up will receive two Terrace Grandstand tickets and pre-race pit/paddock passes, and the second runner up will receive two Concourse Vista grandstand tickets and pre-race pit/paddock passes.

Every presenting donor will be entered for a chance to win several prizes courtesy of Pocono Raceway. Among them are four Terrace Club (same amenities as the Pacesetter Club) seats to the Pocono 500 in 2011, as well as the opportunity to meet all of the NASCAR drivers on-stage during the opening ceremony. Other prizes include: autographed NASCAR driver souvenirs, Sunoco gift cards and much more. (*All prizes are non-transferrable.)

“The Pocono Raceway has long been valued supporters to the American Red Cross, and we cannot thank them enough for the hard work and generosity that they give our organization to arrange this fabulous event every year,” stated Tony Ferlenda, CEO of the American Red Cross NEPA Region. “The incredible prizes offered by the raceway for the recruitment challenge will surely provide the donors with as much excitement as it does us.”

To make an appointment or find a Pocono Raceway blood drive in your area, visit redcrossblood.org/nepa/poconoraceway or call 1-866-986-9440 ext. 2410. Please use the same website and phone number to participate in the Recruitment Challenge. It’s a pint of blood for you, but for another it could be a life saved.

About the American Red Cross:
Governed by volunteers and supported by giving individuals and communities, the American Red Cross has been the single largest supplier of blood products to hospitals throughout the United States for more than 50 years. While local hospital needs are always met first, the Red Cross also helps ensure that no patient goes without blood no matter where or when they need it. The American Red Cross Blood Services - Northeast Division must distribute approximately 3,000 units of blood each day just to meet the basic needs of area patients. In addition to providing nearly half of the nation’s blood supply, the Red Cross provides relief to victims of disaster, trains millions in lifesaving skills, serves as a communication link between U.S. military members and their families, and assists victims of international disasters or conflicts.

9/10 SATORI, CEDAR CREST COLLEGE CELEBRATE WOMEN COMPOSERS ON SEPT. 10

SATORI, a mixed chamber music ensemble of winds, strings and piano based in the Lehigh Valley, will play a special concert featuring music from women composers on Friday, September 10, at 7 p.m. in Tompkins College Center’s Samuels Theatre on the campus of Cedar Crest College. The program, which is sponsored by the gender studies program at Cedar Crest College, is free and open to the public.
The concert will feature music spanning the centuries and will include selections from such classical composers as Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn, as well as contemporary works by Thea Musgrave, Madeleine Dring and Hilary Tann. LuAnn Fletcher, Ph.D., professor of English at Cedar Crest College and head of the gender studies program, said the concert fits nicely with the mission of the College, which focuses on liberal arts and women’s leadership.
“The gender studies program at Cedar Crest supports academic and cultural programming that considers questions of gender expression, inequity, advocacy and education,” Fletcher said. “It connects the academic study of gender dynamics and a historical awareness of the influence of gender on human society with real-life experiences beyond the classroom.”
The name SATORI is derived from a Zen term suggesting the coming together of separate parts to form a whole, a perfect metaphor for chamber music. Nora Suggs, artistic director for SATORI, said the ensemble played a similar concert earlier this year at Vassar College in New York, and was eager to bring this concert featuring the work of women composers closer to home. She said Cedar Crest College—like Vassar a women’s college—is an ideal locale for such a show.
“It’s a thrill for members of the ensemble to be able to play this particular concert in their community for an audience that we anticipate will be highly receptive to celebrating the achievement of women composers,” Suggs said.
For information on attending this free concert by SATORI at Cedar Crest College contact Nora Suggs at 610-435-6036 or send e-mail to nas0719@yahoo.com.

We supply the refreshments, and trophies are awarded for outstanding play in many categories including most home runs and most valuable players.

This event is held in honor of Smoky Joe Wood, the pitching sensation and all around great player with a tremendous love for the game, who hailed from our very own Shohola, Pa. Joe pitched for several years for the Boston Red Sox, gaining the title “smoky” for the velocity of his fastball. When his pitching arm failed him in the latter years of his career, he took to the outfield and became a solid fielder and batter for the Cleveland Indians, thus showing his all around ball playing prowess. Joe was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing in Pike County. He also enjoyed a cold beer at his favorite haunt Rohmans Inn of Shohola.

To support this event and raise a few much needed dollars for the Historical Society, we offer people or their businesses sponsorship opportunities.

Please consider sponsoring an inning for $50. During your inning we will make several references to you or your business during our live “play by play”. Please feel free to send us your own copy, or simply rely on our announcers to talk up your business through the duration of your selected inning. All proceeds benefit the Pike County Historical Society.
Please consider sponsoring this event, or simply participating.

9/25 FARMERS MARKET SUCCESSFUL HEALTH SCREENINGS SERIES COMES TO CLOSE

– In celebration of their 30th Anniversary, the Monroe Farmers’ Market has partnered with the Pocono Medical Center to provide free health screenings to the public. A Cholesterol Screening, the final in the series, is scheduled for Saturday, September 25th, 8am-12pm.
As part of Pocono Medical Center’s Community Health Program, nurses and administrators will be on hand to provide on-site cholesterol tests to the first 100 (one hundred) community members interested in finding out their current cholesterol level. Cholesterol will be measured by drawing blood by a finger stick and is, “much less uncomfortable than a needle blood draw” says Beth Taylor-Mack, Director of the Wellness Institute at the Pocono Medical Center.
Using a machine called the Cholestech LDX, the PMC team will be able to get immediate cholesterol level readings for interested Market shoppers. In general, normal ranges for total cholesterol are:
<200 low risk for heart disease
200-239 medium risk for heart disease
>239 high risk

The medical staff will also be able to advise Market shoppers about appropriate next steps and other health problems that can surface if high cholesterol levels go unchecked. “Elevated cholesterol could lead to problems such as atherosclerosis with is the build up of plaque in the arteries” Taylor-Mack offers.
“Partnering with the Pocono Medical Center to bring this health screening series to the public has been a great fit for the Farmers’ Market”, says Alisa Tongg Weiler, publicist for the market and creator of the Health and Chef Series both introduced this season. “The hospital and the Market are both promoting a culture of healthy lifestyle choices.”
“In addition to eating well,” Taylor-Mack concludes, “ studies have shown that physical activity helps the body to produce more HDL’s –the beneficial type”.
The Monroe Farmers’ Market runs on Saturday through the end of October, 8am-12 noon and is located on Ann Street near the Ribbon Factory in Stroudsburg.

9/24 & 25 PEEC/NPS BIOBLITZ 2010

What is a BioBlitz?
A Bioblitz is a 24-hour event in which teams of scientists, volunteers, and community members join forces to find, identify, and learn about as many local plant and animal species as possible.

BioBlitz events give adults, kids, and teens the opportunity to join biologists and other scientists in the field, participate in bona fide research expeditions, and learn from the experts about biodiversity—both around the planet and in our own backyards.

Why do it?
• Raise public awareness of biodiversity.
• Excite students of all ages about science.
• Generate data about the Park.
• Celebrate the diversity in our backyard.

Goals
• To locate and identify as many species of plants and animals living in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area during a 24 hour period.
• Visual observations and digital photographs only
• Record the common as well as unique species within the Park, as well as the presence of invasive species.
• Create a photographic and textual database of species as a “snapshot in time” record of the Park’s biodiversity.
• Create a baseline for possible changes in biodiversity over time.

The Plan
• 200-300 total participants covering three 8 hour shifts
• Field teams, onsite PEEC teams for parents and younger children, support teams at PEEC BioBlitz HQ
• Eighteen specialist-led field teams of 7-10 volunteer amateur observers will travel to multiple sites representing different ecosystems within the Park.
• They will conduct prolonged observations of species at the sites and photograph and record the data

What is PEEC?
PEEC is the Pocono Environmental Education Center, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) residential environmental education center, within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Its mission is to advance environmental awareness, knowledge, and appreciation through hands-on experience in a natural outdoor classroom.

What is the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area?
The recreation area encompasses 70,000 acres of mountain ridge, forest, and floodplain on both sides of the Delaware River in the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Among the more surprising species of animals in the park are black bear, timber rattlesnakes, bald eagles, and nesting peregrine falcons. Ecosystems include hemlock ravines with bountiful rhododendron and ridge tops with prickly pear cactus.

Forty miles of the Middle Delaware River are within the park, as well as trout streams, lakes, ponds, and some of the highest waterfalls of either state. Water quality is exceptional in this section of the valley. The river's path through the mountains includes the S-curves of Walpack Bend and the Delaware Water Gap.

10/4 MAMA PROJECT, INC. ANNOUNCES INAUGURAL CHILD SURVIVAL GOLF MARATHON FUNDRAISER

Olde Homestead Golf Club will be hosting the Inaugural Child Survival Golf Marathon in New Tripoli, PA on Monday, October 4, 2010. This innovative Golf Marathon is being held to raise funds to attack childhood hunger that is killing millions of children under the age of five every year in the poorest areas of the world.

This unique golf fundraiser will be a 100-hole golf marathon for 36 players committed to making a real difference in child survival. The MAMA Project is looking for community leaders to be “Child Survival Champions”, who will step-up to the plate and bring people in their organizations to compete for this worthy cause and have a major impact in the lives of these children. Each player will have a fundraising goal of at least $2,000 per player and there will be 2 players per hole. A personalized fundraising web-page is provided for each player to raise funds. There is a 30-day fundraising period, beginning September 1, 2010, to procure pledges from sponsors. We encourage players to bring a caddy, a son, daughter, spouse, parent or anyone they choose, who would also help raise funds via their own webpage for Child Survival. The caddy’s minimum fundraising target would be $500, for example, five sponsors at $1.00/hole. Competitions and prizes will be provided to incentivize fundraising. Players will have private use of the golf club and unlimited food and beverages along with free pointers with a golf professional during warm-up. Each player will also receive VIP treatment including a massage!

Why hold a Golf Marathon for Child Survival? According to Dr. Pricilla Benner, M.D., founder and director of the MAMA Project (www.mamaproject.org), “Every year, nearly 10 million children die before their 5th birthday. Hidden childhood hunger, also called micro-nutrient malnutrition, is the root cause of most of the deaths. Although we know that poverty and injustice are the primary reasons for malnutrition, a hungry child cannot wait for global poverty elimination and the advent of social justice. Irreversible damage is being done today and every day that pregnant women and young children suffer from micronutrient malnutrition. Recent scientific discoveries have unlocked mysteries of human nutrition that have led to effective, low cost strategies to save the lives of children. Our program focuses on de-worming and teaching mothers to fortify food in their own home with a low cost, micronutrient powder intended specifically for malnourished women and children. The cost per child is very low. For pennies, a child’s life can be saved. We are targeting millions of children, so we need millions of pennies! Please do the math, and help us get this job done!”

To register for the Golf Marathon, simply sign-up on the website at: www.oldehomesteadgolfclub.com/MAMAProject

The Wall of Memories is a pictorial display to honor, remember and support local people with Alzheimer’s Disease. The Wall will be unveiled at this year’s festival on Sat., Oct. 9, 2010, at the Mauch Chunk Lake Park.
If you’d like your loved one to be included in the Wall of Memories, send your photo to 38 Chestnut Hill, Jim Thorpe, PA 18229. Pictures will not be able to be returned.
“Our goal with the event is to put local faces on the disease, to remember for those who can’t and to create new memories for families who are or may be affected by the disease,” says Kathy Ruff, one of the coordinators of the event.
This year’s Alzheimer’s Family Fun Festival and Memory Walk begins with a walk along the grounds of the old Switchback Gravity Railroad bed beginning at the Mauch Chunk Lake Park. The event includes live music, a car cruise with Jukebox Cruisers and Tamaqua Street Machine Association, free games and contests, chair massages, bake sale and drawings for a Chinese auction and a Memory Quilt.
For more information on the Wall of Memories or to get involved with the Alzheimer’s Family Fun Festival & Memory Walk, call Kathy at 570-645-3059 or email katrina@ptd.net.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association’s® 2010 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures, 5.3 million Americans live with the disease and every 70 seconds someone in America develops Alzheimer’s disease. In 2010, there will be a half million new cases of Alzheimer’s, and there will be more new cases in each subsequent year. In 2050, there will be nearly a million new cases.
Alzheimer’s was the seventh leading cause of death in the country in 2006, the latest year for which final death statistics are available. It was the fifth leading cause of death among individuals aged 65 and older. From 2000-2006 death rates have declined for most major diseases – heart disease (-11.1 percent), breast cancer (-2.6 percent), prostate cancer (-8.7 percent), stroke (-18.2 percent) and HIV/AIDS (-16.3) while Alzheimer’s disease deaths rose 46.1 percent.
According to the new report, in 2009, nearly 11 million family members and other unpaid caregivers provided 12.5 billion hours of care for people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, an amount of unpaid care valued at $144 billion. In fact, Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers provided care valued at more than $1 billion in each of 36 states, and nine states saw an Alzheimer and dementia caregiver contribution valued at $5 billion or more per state.

The cost per child is very low. For pennies, a child’s life can be saved. We are targeting millions of children, so we need millions of pennies! Please do the math, and help us get this job done!”

10/2 BANDS BATTLE TO WIN BIG AT THE SHERMAN THEATER

- The Clash For Cash: Round II Set For October 2nd in Stroudsburg –
Who doesn’t like a little healthy competition? That’s the mindset the Sherman Theater had in place when their recent battle of the bands series, The Clash For Cash, was developed back in March. And after a wildly successful first event, the Sherman has recently announced The Clash For Cash: Round II, taking place on Saturday, October 2nd.
In this ultimate battle of the bands, thirteen bands will compete for $2500 in prize money, headlining slots at Sherman Independent Rock Series shows, and more. Various genres of music will be represented at this showcase where the bands will be judged on musical talent, on-stage performance, and audience response. Judges for this event include Mike Lello, editor of NEPA music and arts weekly magazine The Weekender and John Moser, Senior Music Reporter from The Morning Call newspaper in Allentown, who returns for his second stint as a judge of the Clash. The Sherman Theater has been urging fans of local music to come out and support their favorite performers and cheer them on as they strive to win cold, hard, cash!
Winners of the first Clash For Cash event, ska outfit Survay Says!, have used both the prize money as well as the notoriety from winning the event to help push their musical careers forward. “The first Clash For Cash was an amazing experience to be a part of and winning it was basically a springboard for our career,” explained Survay Says! vocalist/keyboardist Charlie Yankowski. “It made it possible for us to open for national acts like Reel Big Fish, Big D (and the Kids Table), Streetlight Manifesto, and Less Than Jake over the following months.”
The Clash For Cash: Round II grand prize includes $1000 cash, a slot as a headliner on a future Sherman Independent Rock Series show, and future considerations to open for a national performing artist at the Sherman Theater.
Bands that are interested in participating should contact Josh Rittenhouse at the Sherman Theater via email at josh@shermantheater.com. Space and time are limited so interested bands should hurry and sign up soon. Tickets for the Clash For Cash: Round II are $10 in advance and can be purchased from the participating bands, online at www.ShermanTheater.com, by calling the Sherman box office at (570)420-2808, or at the Sherman box office during normal business hours (Thurs-Sat 12-6pm).

About the Sherman Theater

Operation: Touch of home
P. O. box 162
Brodheadsville, Pa. 18322

Army Staff Sgt. William Wary, a Stroudsburg native, is currently wrapping up his third deployment to Iraq since the war began.
Although the 26 year old Soldier has spent more than three years of his adult life out of country serving the nation, his determination to serve doesn’t end there.
Wary is volunteering to return overseas early next year, however this time if the orders come through, Wary will lay his gear down in Afghanistan.
All three of his deployments have come with the 2d Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division out of Fort Drum, N.Y.
But before Wary sets off on his fourth deployment, the Soldier wants to thank his hometown county.
Through Monroe County’s Operation Touch of Home program Wary said he has received numerous care packages during his time of need.
Wary said he received so much support from OTOH that he was able to spread the packages around to those other Soldiers in his unit who may not have been so fortunate.
One hot and miserable day in Iraq, Wary sat thinking of ways he could repay OTOH so he decided to run in the Steamtown Marathon upon his return to the states next month.
“I am running this marathon for Operation Touch of Home because throughout my deployments, I have received massive amounts of care packages from them during Christmas time. In 2004, 2006 and 2009 I received no less than 10 packages each time,” Wary said.
The Soldier said that although the items sent to him were donated, the postage still had to be paid for and he wants to help raise funds so that other deployed Soldiers can receive the same support he did.
“I figure now is a perfect time because it is about the time I’m getting home; it is just in time for them to be preparing the packages to be sending for Christmas 2010,” he said.
Operation Touch of Home representative Maria Bentzoni believes Wary’s idea is remarkable and a truly inspiring story.
“Bill contacted me through our Facebook page (Operation Touch of Home, Monroe County). I was shocked to read his email. We get “thank you’s” from our military men and women, but we have never received anything like what Bill suggested. We are grateful to him for wanting to pay it forward in such an amazing way! We are so proud of him and we will be cheering him on.”
The Steamtown Marathon is a full 26.2 marathon much like those of New York or Boston.
Another Soldier, Sgt. Jeremy Lusk, a native of Florida will accompany Wary on the run. Lusk was deployed with Wary but returned stateside earlier last month.
Wary admits that since he has never ran a full marathon, he is a little nervous.
“26.2 miles is a long way to run. The army’s physical fitness test is only a 2 mile run; we’re adding another 24 so it is quite a bit different to train for.”
Although the marathon is not scheduled until Oct., Wary has been training each and every day to be in his best possible shape.
“I have a full seven day training schedule. I run over here four days a week, cycle two, and have one day of jump training. In between I also lift weights.”
If you would like to help sponsor Wary you can mail a check to: Operation Touch of Home and send to P.O. Box 162, Brodheadsville, PA 18322.
At 50 cents a mile, the total suggested donation would be $13, however all donations will be accepted and are not limited to that amount.
You can also donated on the Indie Go Go website at: http://www.indiegogo.com/Soldiers-Run-Marathon-for-Charity

SUSQUEHANNA SERVICE DOG:PUPPY RAISERS NEEDED

Susquehanna Service Dogs needs Puppy Raisers for wonderful Labrador retriever puppies that will grow and be trained to become service or hearing dogs in support of adults and children with disabilities.

Susquehanna Service Dogs (SSD), a program of Keystone Children & Family Services, breeds, raises, trains and places assistance dogs to support individuals with disabilities. An assistance dog may: pull a manual wheelchair, open a door, retrieve items, alert to sounds, offer balance help, or perform other tasks to increase a person’s independence and ability to be involved in their community.

SSD Puppy Raisers are the amazing and irreplaceable volunteers who raise these “service-dogs-to-be” from the age of eight weeks preparing them for advanced training at 15 to 18 months. Puppy Raisers provide a safe and loving environment, healthy routines, basic training and socialization opportunities. Of course all of this is done under the guidance of a SSD Trainer. Puppy Raisers are asked to attend 2 to 4 training sessions per month located in the Harrisburg area. Training includes instruction classes, lectures and outings to various public arenas.

SSD provides the puppy raiser with puppy, crate, bowl, leash, collar with ID tag, harness, annual dog license, veterinary care, training advice and puppy sitters. The puppy raiser provides a positive environment, enthusiasm for training, transport to vet appointments and a good quality dog food. Your puppy becomes part of your family and your life for the 12 to 18 months you guide them toward success as a service or therapy dog. You are encouraged to take the puppy with you everywhere. Your puppy can accompany you to work, to the grocery store, to church, etc. They will follow the routine of your life just as they will do when they are partnered with their lucky person. Service dogs are permitted in all public places by law just as Seeing Eye dogs are. What fun you will have and just think of all the things you will learn.

Please consider letting a puppy into your life for the good of others and for your family. It is an amazing, wonderful experience. Past Puppy Raisers are available to consult with you in making your decision.

Those interested in this incredibly rewarding volunteer opportunity please go to our website: www.keystonehumansevices.org/ssd and fill out an application to become a volunteer. Upon receiving this application, SSD will contact you to set up an interview at your home. Upon approval, you will be pulled quickly into the never dull world of puppy rising.

Susquehanna Service Dogs is a program of Keystone Children & Family Services a not for profit organization. SSD receives some funding as a program of the United Way of the Capital Region, the balance of the funds to operate this life changing work is provided though donations by the caring public.
