Mauch Chunk Trust Company Continues a Tradition of Honoring Area Volunteers
JIM THORPE, PA--- More than 50 area residents have been recognized as “Community Heroes” by Mauch Chunk Trust Company as part of their award program of the same name. Since 1998, MCT has solicited peer nominations of those residents of the community who have “devoted substantial time to non-profit community organization that benefit or improve the quality of life…” From the nominations, up to six “heroes” have been chosen each year by an independent review committee. While the majority of the award recipients prefer to remain anonymous angels of the community, MCT feels strongly that their good and generous deeds should be made known to the communities they serve. Each “hero” is honored at a public banquet and Mauch Chunk Trust presents each recipient with an inscribed plaque and a $100 donation to the charity of his or her choice.
According to Mauch Chunk Trust Company President and CEO, Patrick H. Reilly, “Volunteers don’t often get the recognition they deserve. We are proud to have the opportunity to honor these outstanding members of our community who selflessly donate their time and talents to help make our local community a better place to live and work.”
Nominations for the 2010 Community Hero Program are now being accepted and you are encouraged to identify and honor the heroes in your community. Nomination forms can be found online at: www.mauchchunktrust.com or at any of the MCT branch offices. The nomination deadline is March 30, 2010.

DEER OPEN HOUSE PREVIEW POSTED ON GAME COMMISSION WEBSITE In an effort to reach more people with its deer open house program, Pennsylvania Game Commission officials posted a two-part video clip on the agency’s website (www.pgc.state.pa.us) that offers a virtual tour of the open house display. To view the clips, which total 13 minutes and 16 seconds, click on “Deer Open House” icon underneath the large photo in the center of the homepage, where you will find a complete schedule of the open houses and links to the two video clips.
“Over the past four rounds, we have been attempting to move the open houses around in each of our six regions to maximize the opportunity for those interested in attending,” said Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director. “Additionally, we’ve been holding these open houses on weekends to avoid times when many people are working.
“To further expand the opportunity for people to see what these open houses are all about, we are pleased to be able to post these two video clips on our website. However, we really encourage people to attempt to visit the open house, as there are opportunities to speak with various Game Commission employees, get answers to your questions, provide feedback and obtain additional information about deer management and hunting.”

Experts coming to Nesquehoning Saturday, March 13
HARRISBURG, Feb. 11 – Carbon County students planning on attending college who are looking for answers about paying for higher education can get the help they need at state Rep. Keith McCall’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid Workshop being held Saturday, March 13 in Nesquehoning.
Experts will be on hand to help students and families complete the 2010-11 Free Application for Federal Student Aid form. This single application is used to determine eligibility for almost all types of federal, state and college-based financial aid for current and prospective students.
The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to Noon Saturday, March 13 at Lehigh Carbon Community College’s Carbon Center, 24 Locust St., Nesquehoning.
“When it comes to a student’s college career, finding out about what financial aid is available is vital – in some cases financial aid determines what college a student can attend, and a student can't get any kind of college financial aid without submitting a FAFSA form," McCall said. "The deadline for submitting the application is coming up fast, but there’s no need to worry. These experts from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency have the facts and are ready to help our students get the funding they need and deserve.
“Basically, if you're a student or the relative of a student, this workshop in Nesquehoning is ‘one-stop shopping’ on the road to a brighter future.”
McCall said students who are unable to attend the workshop can still obtain FAFSA forms from school guidance offices or online at www.educationplanner.org. To find out more about PHEAA and for more help in planning for college, visit www.pheaa.org or call 570-826-1476.

(LEHIGH VALLEY) Selkie Theatre announces a change in date for their concert-reading of Howard Zinn’s “VOICES OF THE PEOPLE SPEAK”. Originally scheduled for Saturday, March 6, “VOICES…” has now moved to Saturday, March 13 at 8pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Bethlehem.
The only change is the date, moving “VOICES…” back one week due to a scheduling conflict with Lepoco’s Annual Dinner & fundraiser (set for Saturday, March 6). Lepoco members and supporters have expressed a desire to attend both events, and Selkie Theatre is happy to serve the Valley community by making that possible. (See corrected Press Release below) SELKIE THEATRE CELEBRATES HOWARD ZINN’S “VOICES OF A PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES” LEHIGH VALLEY -- Selkie Theatre is pleased to announce the company’s return from Ireland with a special concert-reading of Howard Zinn’s VOICES OF A PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, directed by George B. Miller and performed at the Unitarian Universalist Church in historic downtown Bethlehem on Saturday, March 13 at 8pm, with a Reception to follow. Using dramatic performances of the letters, diaries and speeches and songs of everyday Americans, VOICES… explores the concept of democracy through the lives and experiences of ordinary citizens who, through their words and actions, changed the course of history. We’ll hear from Frederick Douglass, Susan B Anthony, Cindy Sheehan and other rebels, dissenters, and visionaries from our past -- and present. Based on historian Howard Zinn’s best-selling book, A People's History of the United States, VOICES… illustrates the relevance of these passionate historical moments to our society today, and reminds us never to take liberty for granted - and that democracy is not a spectator sport. On Saturday, March 13, 2010, a talented group of actors and community leaders from New York, Washington DC, and the Lehigh Valley will help bring these dramatic voices to life in this special one-night-only fundraiser for Amnesty International USA and Selkie Theatre. The Lehigh Valley debut of VOICES… is dedicated to the memory of Howard Zinn, who passed away suddenly on January 28, 2010. A People’s History Of The United States also inspired the recent documentary film THE PEOPLE SPEAK, which debuted on The History Channel in November, 2009. The film’s performers included Matt Damon, Marisa Tomei, Bruce Springsteen, Josh Brolin, Bob Dylan, Viggo Mortensen, and Morgan Freeman. Howard Zinn was a renowned historian, playwright and social activist. A shipyard worker and Air Force bombardier before he went to college under the GI Bill, Zinn received his PH.D. from Columbia University. A Professor of History at Boston University, and author of numerous books, Zinn received the Thomas Merton Award, the Eugene V. Debs Award, the Upton Sinclair Award and the Lannan Literary Award. Selkie Theatre is a “dual-citizenship” theatre company, founded in 2005 by George B Miller and Kate Scuffle as an extension of their 18 years of award-winning work with the original Theatre Outlet. In 2006, Selkie relocated to Galway, Ireland, where the company produced new works by emerging Irish playwrights, created the Selkie Sessions new play development series, and were showcased in the Galway Theatre Festival and at Electric Picnic. Selkie Theatre has returned to the Lehigh Valley, and VOICES… marks their first American production since unpacking their bags. Selkie Theatre presents this one-night-only, regional Premiere of Howard Zinn’s VOICES OF A PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, on Saturday, March 13 at 8pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church, located at 424 Center Street in Bethlehem, PA. The concert reading is directed by George B. Miller and produced with Production Associate Jeffrey Riedy. Tickets are $15; $12 for seniors & students. Group rates are available. For reservations and ticket information, contact Selkie Theatre at 610-351-3526 or at selkietheatre@gmail.com. The Youngers Discover Their Heritage New Album Produced By John Carter Cash
Nashville, Tenn.-- Pennsylvania-based roots-rock band The Youngers boldly stake their claim as one of the most promising and vital bands in America with a stunning new album released Fall 2008.
Lead singer/songwriter/guitarist Todd Bartolo funnels the vibrant energy of a hard-charging, up-and-coming rock band through the sieve of his disparate influences. At times country, at times rock, the music is always spot on and informed by some of the great storytellers of American songwriting tradition including Springsteen, Neil Young and Gram Parsons. But while he has an ear open to what came before, he never plants both feet in the past. He confidently pushes the country-rock cannon forward by honoring his mentors without imitating them.
When it came time to cut the new album, the band turned to producer John Carter Cash (only son of the legendary Johnny and June Carter Cash). They recorded at the historic Cash Cabin studio in Hendersonville, Tenn. The result is Heritage, released Sept. 9, 2008, on the band's own Obuck Records.
Bartolo and his Younger cohorts Randy Krater (Bass and Vocals) and Justin Schaefer (Drums and Percussion) land in that sweet, almost-impossible-to-find intersection of the past and present where old and new combine to create the extraordinary. When it works, as it does here, the results sound at once strangely familiar and still progressive.
The Youngers were joined on Heritage by an all-star supporting cast including John Carter Cash (Percussion), Laura Cash (Fiddle), Ronnie McCoury of The Del McCoury Band (Mandolin), and legendary Waylon Jennings' pedal steel player Ralph Mooney. James Harton (Hammond B3, Piano) and former Younger Jesse Nocera (Guitars) also joined Bartolo and company in the studio.
This new collection swirls with chiming guitars, strident vocals and intuitive storytelling. From the opening, sing-along anthem "Heartbreaker" to the closing down-beat epic "Downtown," The Youngers capture the heartbreak, hopes, dreams, despair and joy of a new generation. And tapping into universal themes that everyone has experienced and conveying them in a way that resonates with their peers is what Heritage is all about.
Singing from the past. Singing to the future. Most importantly...singing in the now. That innate ability to capture life unfolding separates The Youngers and Heritage from the pack.
###
"The Youngers are not just the cutting edge of where music should be right now, they hold to the roots. Their style is both unique and reminiscent of some of the greatest Rock and Roll of our time, timeless and groundbreaking." - John Carter Cash

Elite Equestrian is gearing up for their second annual Spring Regional Horse Expo. This year’s event will feature opening ceremonies with J.C. Cutting Horses performing a breath taking musical, patriotic ride. They will also perform a cutting demonstration and Kids Roping Clinic, both favorites with the crowd. Sonny Garguilo will be making his debut with Elite Equestrian Horse Expos. He has been called “the man who can talk to horses”, a “modern day horse whisperer”. Sonny Garguilo’s non-aggressive training methods make him one of the country’s leading Natural Horseman and problem solvers. Sonny Garguilo Natural Horsemanship is based on opening the line of communication between horse and rider. Sonny is also the founder of the “Hooves For Hope” program which serves special needs people. Sonny can be seen on Talkin’ Horses TV and his web site is SonnyGarguilo.com.
Elite Equestrian Horse Expos are just the right fit to serve northeastern Pennsylvania and its surrounding area. Demonstrations by local trainers provide an excellent opportunity for equestrians to become familiar with facilities in their area. “We take pride in allowing trainers in our area to shine. They’ve told us that they appreciate not being overshadowed by big name trainers like at the larger events.” explains event coordinator Noelle Vander Brink. “Support and participation by the barns, training facilities, trainers and equine organizations in this region make this event possible, and we like to reciprocate that support by providing them with demonstration time. This creates a very effective opportunity for equestrians to find a facility that fits them. It’s a real win-win.”
Many equine clubs and organizations such as the Pennsylvania Equine Council, Lehigh Valley Horse Council, Lehigh Valley Dressage Association, Buxmont Riding Club, Penn-Jersey Riding Club and Bucks County Horse Park will be participating. They provide a wealth of current, relevant information for horse lovers and equestrians of all ages.
Elite Equestrian Horse Expos will again be supporting the Lehigh Valley Ecumenical Center at this event. Everyone who brings a canned good will receive $1 off each adult admission. The Ecumenical Center will have representatives on hand to collect donations and will also accept cash donations. They very much appreciate cash donations since several pounds of food can be purchased with each dollar received.
The Elite Equestrian Spring Horse Expo is the perfect venue to learn, meet other equine enthusiasts and become informed on a variety of topics plus shop for tack and other horse related items including home décor and toys. It’s everything you expect to experience at a horse expo! Free parking and a low admission of $6 per adult and just $2 each for kids 6 -11 (5 and under are free) make it a real bargain. This year’s spring expo is on Saturday, April 10th from 10am to 5pm. The Fall Horse Expo is Saturday, November 20th at the same location. A “Pet and Kids Extravaganza” is being held on Saturday, July 31st, also at the same location. The Bucks County Zoo is a sponsor and will be attending this expo with live animals. Visit www.EliteEquestrian.us for more information. Conveniently located at the Allentown Fairgrounds in Allentown, PA, the Elite Equestrian Horse Expos are a short drive from New Jersey, New York and the Philadelphia area.

The Monroe County Historical Association is pleased to announce the opening of the newest exhibit, WWII – She Served America. For more than 220 years in our country, women have served and sacrificed during times of war. It was not until 1942, however, that females became military personnel.
Roughly 70% of women who enlisted during World War II completed more traditional office-type jobs including serving as clerks and typists. The idea was that by filling office jobs, men were free to fight on the front lines. While women were not allowed to serve at the front lines, often their work had them serving within combat zones.
In addition to propaganda posters, military artifacts and office equipment, three uniforms belonging to Monroe County women are on display. Camilla Edna Fulper Henry served in the U.S. Marine Corps, Sylvia Hauser served in the U.S. Navy achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander and Helen G. Brown, who joined the WAC in 1943, rose to the position of Captain. The exhibit will run until Saturday, November 13, 2010.
The Monroe County Historical Association, located at 900 Main Street, Stroudsburg, is open Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm and 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month 10:00 until 4:00pm. There is an admission charge of $2.00 to see this special exhibit. One hour guided tours of the Mansion are offered at 11:00 am and at 2:00 pm.
For more information, please contact the MCHA office at (570) 421-7703 or visit the Web site at www.monroehistorical.org. The Monroe County Historical Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting, protecting and preserving Monroe County’s history.

Susquehanna Service Dogs needs Puppy Raisers for wonderful Labrador retriever puppies that will grow and be trained to become service or hearing dogs in support of adults and children with disabilities.
Susquehanna Service Dogs (SSD), a program of Keystone Children & Family Services, breeds, raises, trains and places assistance dogs to support individuals with disabilities. An assistance dog may: pull a manual wheelchair, open a door, retrieve items, alert to sounds, offer balance help, or perform other tasks to increase a person’s independence and ability to be involved in their community.
SSD Puppy Raisers are the amazing and irreplaceable volunteers who raise these “service-dogs-to-be” from the age of eight weeks preparing them for advanced training at 15 to 18 months. Puppy Raisers provide a safe and loving environment, healthy routines, basic training and socialization opportunities. Of course all of this is done under the guidance of a SSD Trainer. Puppy Raisers are asked to attend 2 to 4 training sessions per month located in the Harrisburg area. Training includes instruction classes, lectures and outings to various public arenas.
SSD provides the puppy raiser with puppy, crate, bowl, leash, collar with ID tag, harness, annual dog license, veterinary care, training advice and puppy sitters. The puppy raiser provides a positive environment, enthusiasm for training, transport to vet appointments and a good quality dog food. Your puppy becomes part of your family and your life for the 12 to 18 months you guide them toward success as a service or therapy dog. You are encouraged to take the puppy with you everywhere. Your puppy can accompany you to work, to the grocery store, to church, etc. They will follow the routine of your life just as they will do when they are partnered with their lucky person. Service dogs are permitted in all public places by law just as Seeing Eye dogs are. What fun you will have and just think of all the things you will learn.
Please consider letting a puppy into your life for the good of others and for your family. It is an amazing, wonderful experience. Past Puppy Raisers are available to consult with you in making your decision.
Those interested in this incredibly rewarding volunteer opportunity please go to our website: www.keystonehumansevices.org/ssd and fill out an application to become a volunteer. Upon receiving this application, SSD will contact you to set up an interview at your home. Upon approval, you will be pulled quickly into the never dull world of puppy rising.
Susquehanna Service Dogs is a program of Keystone Children & Family Services a not for profit organization. SSD receives some funding as a program of the United Way of the Capital Region, the balance of the funds to operate this life changing work is provided though donations by the caring public.
