The house of representatives put a committee together to address volunteer and funding issues for fire companies and EMS. They hope to add stipends, reimbursements, and change legislation to make it easier. Ralph Lennon, the fire chief at Lake Harmony says a few dollars won't do the trick. Pennsylvania requires 180 hours of training minimum to become a firefighter and that's to much for most.
We also spoke with Joni Gestl of Lehighton Ambulance who says they are blessed to have 20 volunteers who go above and beyond. She hopes more funding will go towards those who have chosen EMS as a career.
