Over the years, artifacts appeared out of the ground right in the Monroe Historical Associations' back yard in Stroudsburg and historians want to find what else is there. So the organization applied and received over 23 thousand dollars in grant money to perform an archeological dig at the Stroud Mansion. Pieces of pottery and buttons have been discovered after heavy rains. And there will be plenty of hands from Juniata College to assist in finding what other pieces of history are waiting to be discovered.
Monroe County Historical Association Executive Director Amy Leiser they have a lot of students who have class room experience but need to get their hands in the dirt so the Historical Association is happy to work with Juniata to provide them that opportunity. The dig could find evidence of Fort Hamilton. It was built near the Mansion during the French and Indian War in 1755. The dig will begin on June 17th and is expected to take three weeks to complete.
