Today, The Pennsylvania Attorney General, Josh Shapiro, visited Allentown to sit with some local leaders in the fight against opioids. He started by talking about what he's seen, but then spent most of the meeting listening to others.
Last week, Shapiro filed a lawsuit against Perdue Pharma, the manufacturer of Oxycontin, which is one of the most used opioids. Shapiro says he didn't feel the company was taking the matter serious, which is why he went forward with the lawsuit. 8 other drug companies are currently being investigated.
According to Shapiro, Perdue was using deceptive marketing techniques, and choosing doctors with a history of over prescribing to push the drug. He also says the company targeted senior citizens, and veterans, because because they felt they were easy targets.
