A new tradition is being introduced in Monroe County the day before Mother’s Day.

It’s called “Self-Care Saturday” for all women because all deserve a day to do something good for their mental health especially during the pandemic.

The Monroe County Chapter of the NAACP came up with the idea for May 8th. The nonprofit encourages women to pick a socially distant activity of their choice or support a local small business by using their services.

Monroe County NAACP Chapter President Christa Caceres says, "To be able to just relax, refresh and give themselves undo attention. As we all know, mothers and women in general do so much for so many people but many times we put ourselves last so this was an opportunity to reach out to the underserved women in our county and give them a little extra love and encouragement, as well as encourage women to take time for themselves."

Beauty baskets are also being created to give to women assisted by PATH of Monroe County, Bloom House and Shepherd’s Maternity House.
