A Jim Thorpe native raising funds for a cancer research grant which honors her late brother exceeds her goal and receives an award.

Heather Formica lost her brother David to leukemia when he was just fifteen years old. Now fifteen years later Formica has successfully completed a ten week fundraising campaign to link an LLS grant for pediatric cancer in his name. The goal was fifty thousand dollars, but she and her team exceeded that mark raising more than eighty-four thousand dollars.

"We were really pushing. We had a lot of people behind us and a lot of support and I had a great team behind me helping."

"We're just very happy we can keep his memory alive and be able to link this for him. Not many people get to link the grants."

Much to her surprise, Formica was presented the 2021 Lehigh Valley Mission Award for her passionate efforts.

"I was very honored. I actually cried. I never expected that."

Formica is continually fundraising to honor a promise to her late brother. Her next fundraising event is a poker run with motorcycles and cars starting at Annie's Ice Cream in Jim Thorpe on July 10th. The money raised goes toward a scholarship in honor of David at Jim Thorpe High School and to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
