A talented artist in Monroe County turns a centuries-old tree into an iconic landmark for his church.

A 200 year-old red oak at Saint John's Evangelical Church in Bartonsville had to be removed, but Parishioner Dan Lauer asked to keep enough of the trunk so he could carve this larger-than-life praying hands sculpture. He didn't want the tree going to waste, and the congregation says it is very fitting.

"There's many things we can pray for especially now. And when people go by, I want them to see it and think about that. Maybe some of their loved ones or something they would like to pray for," Lauer, said.

Lauer is an art teacher at Middle Smithfield Elementary, but wood sculpting is another one of his passions.
