A Monroe County fire department gets the community involved with fire prevention week.

Tunkhannock Township Volunteer Fire Department held its annual fire prevention open house last night. The fire department put their trucks and equipment on display. They were joined by other local fire departments as well as the Pocono Mountain Regional Police and EMS. Officials say the annual event was created to tell the community more about what they do, how to prevent fires in their home and recruit new members.

"Membership in the fire service is down drastically, and it seems to be getting worse every year. Sometimes, if we get some people in here who want to join while they're here with their kids or anybody at all, you know we'll take anybody," George Henning Jr., Deputy Fire Chief, said.

Officials say two easy ways to help prevent fires in your home is to extinguish candles before you go to bed and make sure your smoke detector batteries are working.
