We had a beautiful spectacle today play out across the entire area..... Circumhorizontal Arcs!   They are pretty apparent this time of year as the sun reaches its highest angle in the sky.    Here's how it works......

We all know how rainbows form.  You need water droplets and sunshine at the same time.  As you go higher up into the atmosphere clouds start to become composed of ice crystals like Cirrus clouds.  The upper level winds can be strong and make these snowy like clouds appear feathered and wispy to us on the ground.   These clouds are so high up that you need a pretty high sun angle for the ice crystals to reflect and refract the sunlight.

So keep your eye to the sky whenever we have cirrus clouds during the month of June.... you're almost guaranteed to see this amazing sight!
